In 2020, optimists increased compared with last year, , albeit timidly (+1.6%), while the percentage of those who see a deterioration fell (-1.1%). According to the 32nd Italy Report 2020 by Eurispes, for the majority of Italians the situation over the last 12 months has remained stable (37.9%), while 37.5% have instead experienced a clear or partial deterioration. Around one citizen in ten (14.3%) also notes an improvement, while 10.3% express no opinion.

Italian families forced to use their savings

The Report provides a clear snapshot of Italian families, of whom around half (47.7%) are forced to use their savings to make ends meet (+2.6% compared with 2019). At the same time, the number of those who manage to save is growing, albeit slightly (23.7%; +1.7%). For 34.1%, paying the mortgage instalment is an obstacle, while the situation regarding rent payments is improving (38.7%; -11.3%). There was also a slight fall in the difficulty of paying household utility bills(26,1%; -1,6%).

(26.1%; -1.6%). 27% of Italians probably will not manage to save over the next twelve months and 24.8% are certain they will not; 17.7% think there is a good chance of succeeding and only 5.2% are sure of it.

In the crisis, the family remains a safe haven.

A third of Italians (33.3%) have had to turn to the financial support of their loved ones to cope with economic difficulties. 12.4% have been forced to move back into their family home. In 14.9% of cases, financial help came from friends, colleagues or other relatives (-0.2% compared with 2019). In addition, the Report says, at least one Italian in ten (11.9%) has fallen into the clutches of usury, being unable to access bank credit (up from 7.8% in 2018 and 10.1% in 2019).

Many flee abroad

41.2% of the sample say that a family member has moved away to improve their economic or employment situation: in 22.9% of cases this meant a move to another Italian city and in 18.3% a move abroad. In the South, the Islands and the Centre, moves within national borders prevail (39.4%, 34.4% and 19% respectively); in the North, by contrast, moves abroad are more frequent (27.3% North-East and 15.3% North-West) than moves to other Italian cities (15.3% North-East; 12.2% North-West).

Medical expenses are the most sacrificed

Meeting medical expenses is also a problem for 22.3% of Italians (+1.2%). To contain spending over the past year, 32.5% of Italians gave up medical check-ups and preventive screening and 27.3% cut back on dental expenses; 24.8% went without cosmetic treatments and procedures. To a lesser extent, one Italian in five (20%) gave up medical therapies and procedures or specialist examinations for the treatment of specific conditions (20.1%).

Among the things given up over the past year, the purchase of a new car comes first (51.4%), followed by those who postponed renovation work on their homes (44.2%) and those who gave up replacing worn-out furniture and household appliances (38.2%).
